16th March '95.

Dear Mr Hindley,

I have been given your name by Mrs Sylvia Crook who thinks you may be able to help with a query I have regarding 97th Regiment London Scottish.

During the war there was an Ack-Ack site and camp on the Dorney Common which ajoins the village of Eton Wick. I have found that the first battery to come to the site was the 272 bty. (London Transport) HAA R.A. TA. who came on June 20th 1940 and stayed until November 1940. These troops were followed by Scottish Troops. The assumption that they were London Scottish is based on information I have gathered from local memory. These memories are based on the fact that the troop had Pipers who some local residents remember hearing played in the mornings and at sunset. The only Ack-Ack troops I can think of are the Territorials of the London Scottish formed in 1937/38.
The Artillery Trust say that the 97th.Regt served in the Kent area as far as they know. The London Scottish have no record of a troop at Dorney, but unless there were other Scottish Ack-Ack units or batteries regimented with the London Scottish I feel it must be them.

Following the Scottish boys were 273 Bty. HAC who stayed until the spring of 1941.
Other batteries I have traced having been at camp SM7 are 371, 331, Btys., and 564, 608, 591,Btys. of 183(M) Regt. 83 Brigade.

The History Group aim to record as much of the village history past and living before it is too late and the village looses its identity in more boundary changes.

If you can help to identify these troops I would appreciate your help.
